Yes, we all relate!

But have you noticed white patches on your skin, especially on the face, appearing after a beach holiday? Beach vacation or not, they can also appear after being exposed to the sun for a very long time, and they are called white spots.

These sunspots are tiny, flat, white patches that usually appear on sun-exposed areas, such as the arms, legs, and face. They are mostly not itchy and don’t spread all over. They just sit there and make you wonder what actually caused them.

The white spot story

This usually happens when prolonged sun exposure deprives the skin of pigmentation. It’s common knowledge by now that the UV rays of the sun are harmful. Therefore, during this process, melanocytes (the cells that produce melanin) may lose their function in certain areas, leading to white patches. These can appear not only on the face but also on the back and upper arms.

STORIES YOU MAY LIKE

So, whether it’s a beach holiday or simply too much time in the scorching sun, tanning makes those patches stand out even more.

Skin& Nail Care

Now, the obvious question is, are they really harmful?

Umm…not really.

“They are a harmless sign of long-term sun exposure, not a disease. It’s more of a cosmetic than medical,” Dr Ridhima Arora, MD, dermatology, Radix Healthcare, tells India Today.

Long sun exposure causes sun spots (Photo: Pexels)

It’s definitely some sun damage, but only at a superficial pigment level. “They don’t increase cancer risk or cause other skin problems,” Dr Arora adds.

So, should you panic? Not really. Should you pay attention? Absolutely.

While not everyone is at risk of developing it, farmers, outdoor workers, or people on a sunny holiday may be slightly more prone to white spots owing to the time they spend under the sun. Age can also be a factor. They are most common after 40, as they result from cumulative sun exposure over decades. Younger people aren’t completely off the radar, but they’re relatively less at risk.

These spots can be tricky. How? Because they have doppelgangers!

Often, they are mistaken for signs of calcium or Vitamin B12 deficiency. But they could have several other causes as well.

Dr Gulrez Tyebkhan, consultant dermatologist, Saifee Hospital, explains, “While sun exposure causes white spots, these could be related to an allergy, idiopathic Guttate Hypomelanosis (IGH), atopic dermatitis, vitiligo, or a fungal infection.” Nutritional deficiencies are rarely a direct cause and usually show up with other symptoms too.

Specifically for Indian skin, the tropical climate makes certain conditions more common. With higher levels of sweating, fungal infections tend to increase. “At the same time, allergic conditions are rising in both children and adults, so atopy-related white spots are also becoming more frequent,” Dr Tyebkhan notes.

It’s important to remember that not all white spots are the same. Each case may have a different underlying cause, and only a specialist can identify the exact reason. With the right diagnosis and treatment, many of these spots can improve.

Not quite – but it’s an important preventive measure. It can help reduce both new spot formation and overall sun damage. Still, it’s not just about sunscreen. Broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher, applied generously, is essential, but lifestyle habits matter too:

Sunscreen

Cover up: Choose full-sleeved clothing (tricky in summer, yes), but make sure your body is covered when the sun is at its brightest.

Shade time: According to Dr Arora, UV rays are strongest between 10 am and 4 pm. Stay indoors, carry an umbrella, or cover up with breathable fabrics.

Antioxidant skincare: Products with Vitamin C, E, or niacinamide help strengthen skin against daily stress.

Balanced diet: Antioxidant-rich foods like berries, leafy greens, and nuts keep your skin resilient from the inside out.

Speaking of prevention and treatment, home remedies are never far behind in skin discussions. But in the case of sun spots, experts don’t recommend DIY fixes like rubbing oils, lemon, or turmeric. These don’t prevent or reverse sun spots and may actually irritate the skin.

Therefore, the post-sun white patches are largely harmless, but it’s still stress for the skin. Handle with care.

When you return after a nice beach holiday, you don’t just come back with memories but with a vacation tan…

[1

post-18822","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
